When the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the church at Pentecost, believers were empowered to be witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ, spreading the good news of the kingdom of God throughout the earth (Acts 1:8). And even in the face of severe persecution that broke out against the early church – intense suffering, hostility, and even martyrdom – this gospel continued to spread and the church continued to grow. How? How could believers be so confident even in the face of persistent suffering? Because, as Paul reminds us in Philippians 4, “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:12-13). In this sermon, Pastor Dave looks at the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16, as well several texts from the epistle to the Philippians, and expounds the glorious truth that believers can rejoice in suffering, be faithful to proclaim the gospel, and know that the kingdom of Jesus Christ will prevail.
