Acts 8:14-17 has been at the center of all kinds of controversy regarding the book of Acts and its interpretation. The doctrine of a “second blessing” taught in many churches is based partly on these verses. But why exactly did the risen Lord Jesus wait to send his Holy Spirit on the Samaritan Christians? If indeed they had received the word with joy, believed the gospel, and been baptized in the name of Jesus, why had they not received his Spirit? And what does this mean for us today? In this sermon, Pastor Matt will again show that no obstacle is too great for God’s saving purposes—not persecution or unbelief, not even deep-rooted hostilities or insurmountable barriers of ethnicity or religion. The good news of repentance for the forgiveness of sins is for all mankind.
