As Paul moves into a defense of his gospel against the criticisms of his opponents, he gives a brief autobiography detailing the events surrounding his conversion. He explains that though he formerly “was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent” of Christianity, he nevertheless “received mercy” – being transformed into one of the most remarkable evangelists of all time, zealously preaching the very gospel he once violently opposed (Gal. 1:13-16; 1 Tim. 1:13-16). But what was the cause of this great change? In this sermon, Pastor Matt examines the gracious call of God and the truth behind Paul’s words: “by the grace of God I am what I am” (1 Cor. 15:9-10).
