The author of Hebrews is deeply concerned about his fellow believers. He sees that they had stopped growing up in the gospel, that they were wanting to go back to their former way of life, back to Judaism, to the Law, to the old covenant. But such a rejection of the Son would only lead to spiritual ruin. So, the author is trying to help them see that Jesus is better, that he is worth it. The gospel of Jesus is the word of righteousness; it is the power of God for salvation. He has been teaching them and warning them about these things so that they might grow up and bear much fruit.
In this sermon, pastor Matt reminds us that those who give up on the gospel give up all hope of ever being restored. But true believers are those heed the warnings and exhortations of God’s word and bear the fruit of enduring faith.
