“When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). Jesus has just clearly announced his departure—the exodus that he came to accomplish. He is going to be delivered into the hands of men, suffer, die, and rise again. This was the fixed path of the promised Messiah; he was resolved to redeem his people. Yet his disciples were still missing the point, arguing instead about who would be the greatest in the kingdom, holding elitist views about their privileged status as disciples, and being eager to see God’s judgment fall upon those who rejected Jesus. In this sermon, Pastor Dave calls the church to be resolved to walk in humility and grace towards all men, to lay down our lives for others in love that they might come to know the Savior.
