On the evening before his crucifixion, the true Passover Lamb was surrounded by the most wretched and pathetic of company. One of his disciples was about to betray him; another would deny him three times before morning; and all of them, his friends, would abandon him. Jesus nevertheless continues to love them, encouraging and preparing them to be his faithful followers in the days ahead. He does this by not only teaching them but also revealing to them his glory, “as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). In this sermon, Pastor Matt explains that faithful followers of Jesus are those who depend on God’s preserving grace, rather than their own strength, and who endure the world’s hostile opposition.
