After Jesus boldly declares that he is the fulfillment of Isaiah 61:1-2, he is met with a variety of responses. Those in the synagogue were “filled with wrath” and attempted to hurl him off of a cliff (Luke 4:28-29) because of their unbelief. Others were astonished, filled with amazement at Jesus and the authority he possessed (Luke 4:32, 36-37). Ironically, it was the demons being cast out who were quick to confess that Jesus truly was the Christ, the Holy One, the son of the Living God (Luke 4:34, 41)! Yet Jesus was nevertheless determined to accomplish the mission for which he was sent into the world. In this sermon, Pastor Dave examines these responses to Jesus’ ministry and challenges the church to recognize him as Lord and Christ, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God to those in our community.
