The King of the Land (1 Samuel 21:1 – 22:5)

After Jonathan had exposed his father’s wicked intentions beyond all doubt, David knew it was time to go. From now until the end of the book, David will be on the run as a fugitive, as an exile. Like Israel, who escaped from Pharaoh yet had to wander through the wilderness before entering the promised land, David has escaped from Saul but will have to go through a time in the wilderness before he can wear the crown. But it’s here, in the wilderness, that Yahweh will continue to be with his chosen king. He will continue to provide for him, to preserve him, and to refine him. And as a result, more and more people will begin to recognize who he is as God’s anointed one, as Israel’s messiah.

In this sermon, pastor Matt shows us how 1 Samuel 21 ultimately reveals the truth of the gospel, that Jesus is the king whom God has chosen that we must follow. Like David, he was sustained in life and delivered from death so that all who come to him in believing loyalty might find rest under his saving rule.
