Which King Will You Serve? (2 Samuel 2:1-11)

David had been waiting patiently to receive the kingdom and the day had finally come. This is a crucial moment in the story of the Bible. Three times we read here that David was now king over the house of Judah. However, as we might expect, not all Israel was happy to receive their king. Some didn’t want him. Indeed, our text reveals another truth of the kingdom: it demands a response. It always presents us with a choice to make, a question we must answer: Which king will you serve? You must choose this day whom you will serve: God’s king or your own. The good news is that God’s king has been exalted and invites everyone to know his saving rule. The question is whether we will recognize and serve him faithfully, or reject him for a king of our making.
