“The chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe'” (Mark 15:31-32). As Jesus hangs upon the cross, suffering the physical pain of crucifixion and spiritual anguish of the curse, he is surrounded by scoffers. Behind their demands, that he save himself to prove that he truly was the Christ, we find Satan’s last effort to tempt Jesus into abandoning his God-given mission of salvation. But though Jesus was the Son of God, could he have saved himself that fateful day? In this Good Friday sermon, Pastor Matt examines the costly demands of this world and brings out the marvelous truth of Christ’s finished work upon the cross as the fulfillment of God’s redemption plan.
