One of the main themes of Titus is that sound doctrine leads to wholehearted devotion. The false teachers on Crete were trying to produce godliness through their doctrine—by conformity to a set of rules and external regulations. However, their legalism only resulted in detestable, disobedient sinners with defiled hearts, “unfit for any good work” (Titus 1:16). So what doctrine leads to devotion? What is the truth that leads to godliness (Titus 1:1)? What is the trustworthy word to be declared to the church and adorned before the world (Titus 1:9; 2:10)? In this sermon, Pastor Matt explains that is the gospel of God’s grace in Christ Jesus that brings salvation, leads to godliness in the present age, and brings us to glory.
