A Question About Government (Luke 20:19-26)

When asked by the Pharisees and Herodians whether or not it was lawful for Jews to pay tribute to Caesar, Jesus replied by asking whose image was engraved upon one of their coins. They answered him: “Caesar’s.” This set the stage for one of Jesus’ most famous teachings: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Luke 20:24-25). But what things belong to Caesar? How does that relate to what belongs to God? To whom do we owe our allegiance? And what does the image of Caesar on a denarius have to do with our lives? In this sermon, Pastor Matt explains how we are to honor our sovereign God by submitting to his authorities and shows how Christians are first and foremost citizens of the kingdom of heaven.
