What does it look like to truly love the Master and to be among those “who will eat bread in the kingdom of God” (Luke 14:15)? Jesus’ parable in this passage shows us that those who were first invited made pathetic excuses and ultimately missed out—which is precisely what the elite of Israel who rejected their Messiah did. But the poor, the crippled, and the blind found seats at the Master’s table, as well as many outside of ethnic Israel. Why? Because they accepted the invitation from the Master’s servant; because they believe in and followed Jesus. In this sermon, Pastor Dave teaches on the realities of discipleship and its cost, showing that whoever does not deny himself and the pleasures of this world to follow Jesus is not a true disciple (Luke 14:26, 27, 33).
