Immediately after his baptism, Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days to enter into battle with Satan (Luke 4:1-2; Mark 1:12-13). This temptation in the wilderness was a pivotal moment in the mission of the Son of God to accomplish salvation for humanity. As the wonderful hymn states, “Come behold the wondrous mystery: He the perfect Son of Man / In his living, in his suffering, never trace nor stain of sin. / See the true and better Adam come to save the hell-bound man / Christ the great and sure fulfillment of the law; in Him we stand.” In this sermon, Pastor Dave points us to Jesus, our great, merciful, and sinless high priest (Heb. 4:14-16), who has overcome the power of sin for his people through his obedient life and substitutionary death upon the cross.
