Following Jesus’ declaration of coming not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance, the Pharisees and scribes immediately defend their religiosity. Rather than hear, understand, and recognize their sinful condition before a holy God, they continue to boast in their self-righteousness and cling to their faithful law-keeping. But Jesus explains that the old covenant system of approaching God through law and religious tradition was being replaced by a new covenant revealed and established by him (Heb. 8:6-13); and that these are incompatible. In this sermon, Pastor Dave explains that one cannot simply add a little “Jesus” to their religious, moralistic legalism, but rather must abandon their attempts at self-salvation and by faith cling to the finished work of Christ.
