“Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (Ps. 121:4). Traditionally sung by pilgrims traveling up to the temple in Jerusalem, this Song of Ascent declares the faithful, vigilant, keeping power of God over his chosen people. But can we Gentiles sing and apply this Psalm today? If we aren’t making pilgrimages to Jerusalem, celebrating Jewish feasts, or even ethnically Jewish, can we still apply this psalm to our own lives? The New Testament authors would answer with a resounding “yes!”, for “if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Gal. 3:29); we are the true Israel of God! In this sermon, Pastor Matt demonstrates, from Psalm 121 and the witness of the New Testament, how the perseverance of the Church is guaranteed because it is our God who graciously preserves us in steadfast love.
