Most sermons based on the life of Old Testament characters typically revolve around all of the ways that we can learn to be just like them. In the case of Elijah, the focus is always on his faith, his powerful prayers, his extraordinary miracles, his power and anointing, etc., and how we should strive to be a man of faith just like him. However, in this sermon, Pastor Dave takes the focus off of Elijah and his attributes and shifts our attention to the faithfulness of God; despite the rebellion and idolatry of Israel, and even the doubt and discouragement of Elijah, “if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). It is by emphasizing God’s faithfulness in the life of this Old Testament prophet that enables us to come to better appreciate the truth of the gospel.
