The parable of the Good Samaritan and Jesus’ visit to the home of Mary and Martha are related in a couple of significant ways. First, here we find both the command to show mercy to our neighbors and do good works (Luke 10:37), but also the preliminary and gracious invitation to find rest in the presence of the Lord (Luke 10:42). But second, we see two individuals— a lawyer and Martha—who are essentially seeking to justify themselves before God, who want their works to be seen. But Jesus diagnoses the problem in both instances as being fundamentally a heart issue. In this sermon, Pastor Dave explains how the gospel of Jesus Christ addresses the sinfulness of our hearts, remedies our need to justify ourselves, and enables us to love and serve the Lord with gladness.
